Building a Traceable Scientific Evidence Matrix
Before writing a key message, a dossier, or a medical presentation, there is a step that gets skipped far too often — one that determines the solidity of everything built on top of it: mapping the available evidence with method. This isn't about accumulating references; it's about building a structure that lets you trace every claim back to its source and update it when new evidence appears.
A recent methodological review on mapping reviews notes that, unlike systematic reviews focused on evaluating an intervention's effectiveness, mapping reviews are oriented toward broad research questions whose purpose is to describe existing evidence on a topic [1]. That distinction matters for evidence mapping in the pharmaceutical industry: the goal isn't to demonstrate superiority, but to have a complete, organized picture of what the science says — and doesn't yet say — about a product or molecule.
The same review identifies a recurring problem in practice: the lack of published protocols before mapping begins, which compromises the transparency and reproducibility of the process [1]. Applied to a regulated context like pharma, this translates into a concrete recommendation: define in writing, before starting, which sources will be consulted, which study types will be included (human, animal, in vitro, mechanistic), and by what criteria each will be classified — instead of building the matrix as you go.
A more recent methodological analysis of mapping reviews, evidence maps, and gap maps further stresses that strengthening the link between mapping results and their real use by decision-makers requires actively involving those users from the planning stage [2]. For a medical or commercial team, this means the evidence matrix shouldn't be built in isolation: the team that will use it — for key messages, for the medical-legal review committee, for market access — should help define what questions that matrix needs to answer.
A well-built matrix serves three functions at once: it grounds each message in its exact source, it honestly exposes evidence gaps before a regulator or committee finds them, and it can be updated without redoing the work from scratch when a new study appears. That traceability is, in practice, what separates a defensible dossier from one that collapses at the first hard question.
